5 prison warders dismissed for corruption, lax discipline

The civil service sub-committee of the Corrections Department will dismiss five officials, all prison warders, from the government service for breach of discipline, department chief Ayut Sinthoppan revealed on Tuesday.

Mr Ayut said the five warders were found to have been in breach of discipline, causing damage to the department's reputation.

Of the five, two were dismissed without pension -- one for the embezzlement of revenues from the sale of items produced by inmates at an exhibition of the Corrections Department, and the other for demanding and receiving kickbacks from inmates in return for assigning them to perform public works outside the prison without proper supervision and allowing them to use mobile phones.

Three others were dismissed with pension. One had brought tobacco into the prison for an inmate by hiding it in the legs of his trousers and his shoes. The two others, who were assigned to take an inmate to a hospital for treatment, allowed the inmate to escape while in their care; the prisoner was not recaptured.

Mr Ayut said the five had violated the Corrections Department's regulations and discipline and the Corrections Act of 2017.
