The Criminal Court has granted bail to eight pro-democracy activists of the People's Movement who took part in a demonstration at the Democracy Monument on Feb 13 and were arrested by Chanasongkhram police.

The eight suspects - Jitrakorn Jackobi Jr, Pornprom Kongtrakul, Pathakorn Japorn, Thongnopklao Jaithai, Thanadet Wanphoklang, Adisak Phala, Chainarong Sompolkrang and Purapol Wongchiak -  were charged with violating the Public Assembly Act and the emergency decree.

They were handed over to Chanasongkhram police investigators about 3am on Feb 14. Police are empowered to detain them for 48 hours for completion of their investigation.

Investigators on Monday asked the Criminal Court to approve their detention for another 12 days, saying there were 11 more witnesses to be questioned. They opposed bail.

The hearing was a video conference between the police station and the court, due to Covid-19 concerns.

The court approved the detention request but ruled that the suspects could seek temporary release on bail.

Guarantors submitted their requests and the eight were released on 35,000 baht bail each.
