AYUTTHAYA: A fire destroyed 2,000 tonnes of dried cassava root at a riverside warehouse in Nakhon Luang district on Tuesday night.

The warehouse belongs to Sap Sathaporn Co and is beside the Pa Sak river in tambon Phong Phang.

About 30 fire engines and crews fought the blaze, using water pumped from the river.

The fire was brought under control late in the night, but firemen kept spraying water on the mountain of smouldering cassava to prevent it flaring up again.

Four people were injured when a fire truck and a rescue vehicle collided while rushing to the scene.

Provincial governor Panu Yaemsri  inspeted the scene on Wednesday morning.

He said local officials would survey communities in Nakhon Luang district and nearby to see how and whether they were affected by the heat and smoke spreading from the warehouse.

The full extent of the damage was still being assessed, Mr Panu said.
