Probe into boy scout's drowning

Kalasin: Primary Education Area Office 2 in Kalasin has launched a probe into teachers responsible for organising a boy scout camp activity blamed for the death of a student.

Surachet Pala-en, director of Primary Education Area Office 2, said the panel will investigate teachers at a school in Huai Mek district.

The teachers allegedly arranged the scout activities in which a Mathayom 3 student, identified as Thongnoppakao Sitha, 15, was told to dive at one of the water stations located in a pond on Tuesday. The boy, whose parents insisted could not swim, drowned.

Mr Surachet said he has talked to the director of the school and the probe will be completed in seven days.

If the boy's death was found to be the result of carelessness on the part of teachers or school staff, a disciplinary investigation will determine the punishment against them.

Pol Col Sonakun Sapsombat, superintendent of Huai Mek station, yesterday took investigators to inspect the pond where the boy drowned. The police would begin questioning people in the case after the boy's funeral today.

Somparn Phusrithong, 54, the boy's stepfather, and Buaruen Sitha, 48, his mother, have criticised the school for organising the diving activity as the boy could not swim.

They claimed no rescue equipment was made available.
