Almost 700 people have been arrested in an anti-crime drive ahead of nationwide municipal council elections tomorrow, according to the Crime Suppression Division (CSD).
CSD chief Pol Maj Gen Suwat Saengnoom said the division has launched a crackdown ahead of tomorrow's local polls and nabbed a total of 680 people in the week-long campaign that ended yesterday.
Among those charged, 144 are accused of illegal gambling and 37 others with illegal possession of firearms after 52 guns were confiscated in the crackdown.
Meanwhile, two families in Pathum Thani's Thanyaburi district yesterday called on the poll agency to investigate why dead relatives have been listed as eligible voters in tomorrow's polls.
The first case was reported by Sunee Kaenmanee, 64.
She said she was surprised to see her dead brother-in-law listed as an eligible voter when she examined the voting list at a polling station.
The other case was reported by Somrit Juimuangsri, 72, who said his son, who died more than 20 years ago at the age of 7, appeared as an eligible voter.
"I would like the election officials to examine and correct this obvious mistake," said Mr Somrit.
Tomorrow's municipal council elections are the second nationwide local polls to be organised since the May 2014 coup.
The Provincial Administrative Organisation polls were the first to be held on Dec 20 last year.
The Election Commission has put in place social-distancing measures at polling stations to prevent risks of Covid-19 infections.
Voters will also be screened by trained officials for fever and other symptoms at polling booths.
Polls will be open from 8am to 5pm to select mayors and councillors to serve on 2,472 municipal councils.
