AYUTTHAYA: Twelve coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Ayutthaya province on Saturday, raising the total number of cases in this central province to 280.

Health authorities on Saturday reported that the 12 new cases were people who caught the disease at the Central Shrimp Market or were infected by family members.

The new infections raised the total number of the cases in the province from the latest outbreak to 280. Of them, 73 had recovered and 207 remained in hospitals.

In April alone, there were 220 infections.

Authorities said another 141 at-risk people who had already taken Covid-19 tests were awaiting test results.

Ayutthaya governor Phanu Yaemsri ordered the chiefs of 16 districts to visit at-risk residents in their areas to give them moral support. He also asked them to isolate themselves at home for 14 days.

Chalermchai Srabua, Bang Sai district chief, on Saturday brought relief packages to three households in tambon Sanam Chai whose members were at risk of contracting Covid-19. All of them agreed to stay home.

Earlier, the provincial disease-control panel closed the Central Shrimp Market in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district for seven days to April 27 to disinfect it after many people working there were infected.
