Cops arrest seven in Euro 2020 betting crackdown

Seven people have been arrested for operating an illegal gambling website during a crackdown to coincide with the ongoing Uefa Euro 2020 football tournament, police said yesterday.

Assets worth more than 18 million baht were confiscated during police operations which targeted four locations -- two in Nonthaburi and one each in Bangkok and Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapas, deputy national police chief and director of the Police Cyber Taskforce (PCT), said police obtained warrants to search the premises on suspicion that they were linked to a gambling website, www.ufabet.com.

He said the website also had Line official accounts including UFA777, UFA368, UFAR1, and UBET777 and the network had a monthly circulation of 200 million baht.

Among the items seized were 17 mobile phones, two tablets, five notebook computers, 91 bank passbooks, hundreds of amulets and talismans, jewellery, four cars and 595,000 baht in cash. The suspects were initially charged with colluding to provide gambling services without permission.

According to Pol Gen Damrongsak, 38 people were arrested in six cases and assets worth 30 million baht were seized during the June 1-18 operation.
