Cops swoop on betting hosts for Euro 2020

TAK: Police arrested two men in Mae Sot district yesterday and charged them with hosting online gambling during the Euro 2020 football tournament.

Immigration Bureau (IB) police arrested Lop Buri natives Siwa Malipuang, 36 and Siwakorn Meesiri, 22, at a house on Song Kwai Road.

Six desktop and notebook computers, 10 ATM cards and 19 bankbooks were seized during the raid. Officers also found about 200 grammes of marijuana on the premises.

The raid was led by immigration police commissioner Pol Lt Gen Sompong Chingduang.

He said the suspects confessed to working with the gothambetvip gambling website. and handling 10-20 million baht a month in bets.

Online gambling hosts have been hired by foreign gambling networks and operate in many locations along the western border in Tak, the immigration commissioner said.

Also yesterday, Pol Lt Gen Sompong ordered local IB officers to keep an eye out for illegal activities conducted by foreign nationals, following the recent arrest of 53 foreigners

They were mostly Chinese nationals rounded up at six resorts in Mae Hong Son for allegedly running a multi-million baht call-centre scam.

The Crime Suppression Division (CSD) police raided the six resorts on Sunday after learning they were being used as bases to conduct their fraud operation.

Of the 53 suspects, 40 were Chinese nationals, 12 were from Myanmar and one was Filipino, according to Pol Maj Gen Jirapob Phuridet, deputy CSD commander.
