Army to give conscripts quick shots

About 60,000 new conscripts and their instructors will be vaccinated against Covid-19 soon after they report for duty, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) announced yesterday.

Assistant CCSA spokeswoman, Dr Apisamai Srirangson, said Covid-19 measures are being stepped up at military bases across the nation as some 60,000 new conscripts are scheduled to report for duty July 1-3.

She said they and their drill instructors are expected to be vaccinated soon after to help create herd immunity and protect them from infections.

According to the CCSA spokeswoman, the conscripts are required to report for duty at provincial halls in their respective provinces where they will be screened for Covid-19. If found infected they will be treated and won't join their units until they have made a complete recovery.

All will undergo 14-day quarantine before they are sent to their units where they will be given another 14 days for adjustment.

Those unable to report for duty because they are being isolated or treated for Covid-19 infections will not be regarded as draft dodgers, she said.

According to the army, the new conscripts and training personnel top its list to be vaccinated, and its Covid-19 administration centre will distribute the vaccine supplies allocated by the Defence Ministry as soon as possible.
