Hua Hin logs 228 cases, ups mass testing

Prachuap Khiri Khan has found 241 new Covid-19 cases in the province and 228 of them were in the tourist district of Hua Hin.

Prachuap Khiri Khan deputy governor Chamaiporn Ampaijit said yesterday that most of the new infections were Thai and Myanmar workers at the pineapple canning factory of Dole Thailand Co in tambon Nong Phlab, Hua Hin.

Mass testing found 218 new cases at the plant in 24 hours.

The plant was closed on July 1 and its workers tested for the virus.

Infected workers were admitted to local hospitals. Colleagues who had been in close contact with them were isolated at Addera Residence Hotel in Hua Hin.

On Tuesday, Prachuap Khiri Khan also logged five new Covid-19 cases in Pran Buri district, four in Sam Roi Yot and two each in Muang and Bang Saphan districts.

Since April 1, the number of Covid-19 cases in Prachuap Khiri Khan has reached 3,092. Of these, 2,333 have recovered. The death toll is eight for the period.

In Bangkok, the Labour Ministry has come up with a plan to use money from the fund for regulating migrant workers to pay for a programme to supply free meals to migrant workers.

The workers were left stranded in construction worker camps sealed off for Covid-19 containment, said minister Suchart Chomklin. Some were worried about how they would meet basic needs if they could not leave camp.

This fund actually comes from fees collected from migrant workers or their bosses when they apply for work permits, he said.

While being suspended from work during the Covid-19 control period, the workers are receiving unemployment benefits like their Thai counterparts, including payment of 50% of their wages, he said.

The programme, to be carried out in cooperation with a club of street food vendors in Bangkok and the Thai Restaurant Association, will see about 80,000 meal boxes prepared and delivered to the worker camps each day, he said.
