Cops investigate hazard pay 'theft'

Police are gathering evidence against a state official in Kamphaeng Phet accused of stealing 12-million-baht worth of hazard pay from frontline workers before forwarding the case to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).

Pol Col Watcharakiat Siriwimonrit, Muang Kamphaeng Phet police chief, said police have ordered a freeze on three bank accounts held by Wisa Amphut, a finance and accounting analyst attached to the Kamphaeng Phet public health office.

Investigations found that transfers worth between 1,000 to more than 1 million baht were sent to the accounts between January and July and withdrawals were also made frequently, Pol Col Watcharakiat said. There was only 79.31 baht left in the latest account balance on July 30, he said.

Since the case involves a state official, police are gathering evidence and the case is expected to be forwarded to the NACC this week, he said, adding that the Anti-Money Laundering Office may also become involved.

Previously, Dr Parinya Nakpunbut, chief of Kamphaeng Phet public health office, confirmed that a fraud charge will be pursued against the official over the missing 12-million-baht worth of relief pay for frontline people, after details of the allegations circulated on social media.

He said the public health office detected suspicious financial documents and after investigating they found that more than 12 million baht had been transferred to accounts belonging to the suspect.
