City Hall pushes canal revamp

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is preparing to move forward with its 100-million-baht plan to renovate Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem.

Bangkok deputy governor Sakchai Boonma yesterday said the first phase of the project will cover the 12.5-kilometre stretch from Charoen Sawat 36 Bridge to Kasatsuek Bridge in Hua Lamphong under a budget of 99.98 million baht.

The construction contract could be signed by the end of September, Mr Sakchai said.

"The project will boost transport and serve as a new landmark for recreation and businesses.

"The Bangkok governor hopes the entire renovation will be finished by the end of the year," he said.

Plans include refurbishing four piers and adding two more.

The walkways will be upgraded and illuminated along the canal, and more trees and foliage will be planted. Drainage and security will also be improved.

The BMA will also seek 17.6 million baht in the next fiscal year to renovate the rest of the canal, Mr Sakchai said.
