Shuffle of high-level officials

A new chief of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and a new government spokesman are among a number of appointments and transfers of high-level government officials approved by the cabinet yesterday.

Thanakorn: New spokesman

Dr Trairith Temahiwong, an inspector with the Justice Ministry, was appointed the new DSI chief, replacing Pol Lt Col Korawat Parnprapakorn who is due to retire on Sept 30, said a source at the ministry.

Dr Trairith, 56, graduated with a medical degree from Prince of Songkla University in 1989 and later with a PhD in cosmetic science from Mae Fah Luang University, said the source. Before this appointment he has been serving as a deputy chief of the DSI from 2018 until last year when he was promoted to be an inspector, said the source.

Samut Sakhon governor Verasak Vichitsangsri, meanwhile, was transferred to be the governor of Ang Thong, while the Uthai Thani governor was transferred to Samut Sakhon and the Ang Thong governor to Uthai Thani, said a source.

Trairith: New DSI chief

Mr Verasak had earlier tendered a resignation letter to the Interior Ministry last week, citing poor health; but the resignation was reportedly suspended by the ministry before the transfer was approved yesterday by the cabinet, said the same source. Mr Verasak was born in Ang Thong, said the source.

The other important appointment approved yesterday was that of Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana as the new government spokesman replacing Anucha Burapachaisri who was transferred to be a deputy secretary-general to the prime minister, said another source.

The appointment of Mr Thanakorn, who is known to be able to respond well to questions about both political and economic issues, is aimed at improving the government's ability to communicate well in these two areas, said the source.
