Police warn of more arrests if protesters keep rallying

Police have warned anti-government protesters they will face numerous criminal charges if they carry on, after 52 protesters were arrested at a gathering at Din Daeng on Saturday night.

The warning was issued by Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) spokesman Piya Tawichai at a press briefing yesterday.

One police officer was seriously injured after a firecracker hit his right eye.

"We will investigate all demonstrations to gather evidence to bring those people involved to justice, especially those who stirred up chaos in the country," Pol Maj Gen Piya said.

"If youths commit the offence, their parents will also be charged under the Child Protection Act."

Pol Maj Gen Piya said 52 protesters, including two Cambodians, were arrested on Saturday night at the Din Daeng intersection protest.

All would be charged with violating the emergency decree, while the two Cambodians would be sent back to their home country.

"The Metropolitan Police Bureau would like to warn you that areas in Bangkok are considered to be a maximum control area for Covid-19.

"Any gathering of people posing risks of spreading the disease violates the emergency decree," he said.

Five riot police officers were injured in the rally on Saturday, including one seriously hurt when the firecracker hit his eye.

He was identified as Pol L/C Thanawut Jirakhachen, 28. He is receiving medical treatment at Police General Hospital.

There was also bleeding in his brain and his right eye-socket bone was broken, doctors said, updating his condition.

There were also other wounds to his face, according to city police.

Meanwhile, the Thai Lawyers for Human Rights said 78 people were detained, including 20 who were at the rally site but did not participate in the demonstration.

Two political groups sent observers to a rally against Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha at Din Daeng junction yesterday after some of the largest mass arrests by police a night before.

The United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration, together with the Thalufah group, yesterday said they would post witnesses at rallies.
