Tropical depression Conson brought heavy rain to 44 provinces in the Northeast and the East and triggered floods in some provinces on Monday, while many low-lying areas in Ayutthaya are being warned to brace for flooding.
The tropical depression, coming from Vietnam, yesterday reached the northeastern province of Mukdahan where strong winds and heavy rain began early in the morning, said the Meteorological Department.
The depression has impacted also Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakhon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket, and Ubon Ratchathani, said the department.
Heavy rain and strong winds were also expected in eastern provinces while rough seas are expected in both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, said the department.
Although the depression was expected to later lose its strength and become a low-pressure trough after arriving in the Northeast yesterday, it will continue causing heavy rain in several parts of the country in the next two to three days, said the department.
One of the most serious flooding incidents was yesterday reported in Dan Khun Thot district of Nakhon Ratchasima where more than 150 houses in Ban Nai village were inundated. Neighbouring Non Sung district of the same province had about 500 rai of farmland submerged yesterday.
Thirasak Prayat, director for water management and maintenance of the 8th Royal Irrigation Office, said Nakhon Ratchasima's four main reservoirs are still able to receive more water.
In Phetchabun, where flooding occurred over the weekend, the local administrative bodies yesterday were closely monitoring the water in Muang and Lom Sak districts while building a floodwall to prevent overflow from the Pa Sak River.
Villagers in these districts were also trying to stop excess water from flooding their paddy fields.
The Royal Irrigation Department has warned residents of low-lying areas in Phak Hai, Sena and Bang Ban districts of Ayutthaya to prepare for sudden rises in water levels in the Chao Phraya and Noi rivers running through the province.
The higher water levels were a result of an increase in water being released from Chao Phraya Dam.
Phanu Yaemsi, provincial governor, yesterday issued a warning for residents of low-lying areas along the rivers to prepare for possible flooding.
