There were 11,754 new Covid-19 cases and 123 more fatalities recorded during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Friday morning.
There were 11,253 cases in the general population and 501 among prison inmates.
The number of new cases rose from the 11,646 announced on Thursday, when the country recorded 107 more deaths.
On Thursday, 12,473 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.
Since April 1, when the third wave of Covid-19 began, Thailand has treated 1,586,366 Covid-19 patients, 1,455,720 of whom have recovered to date.
Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 1,615,229 Covid-19 cases, with 1,483,146 complete recoveries so far.
The death toll stood at 16,756 during the third wave and 16,850 since the beginning of the pandemic.
The kingdom's 24-hour high of Covid-19 fatalities was 312 recorded on Aug 18. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 13.
Apisamai Srirangson, a spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said in the afternoon briefing that the latest 123 fatalities were aged 23 to 99 years. All were Thai.
Bangkok logged the most new deaths at 29 (down from 42 the previous day) while a further 25 were reported in the adjacent provinces of Samut Prakan (11), Samut Sakhon (6), Nakhon Pathom (5) and Pathum Thani (3).
Other central plain provinces further from the capital recorded 33 more deaths – in Ratchaburi (8), Saraburi (4), Ayutthaya (3), Lop Buri (3), Chanthaburi (3), Rayong (3), Phetchaburi (2), Chachoengsao (2), Chon Buri (2), Nakhon Nayok (1), Trat (1) and Prachin Buri (1).
The Northeast had 5 new fatalities – in Buri Ram (2), Udon Thani (1), Chaiyaphum (1) and Nakhon Ratchasima (1).
The South reported 26 more deaths – in Narathiwat (8), Yala (4), Songkhla (3), Phatthalung (3), Pattani (2), Nakhon Si Thammarat (2), Chumphon (1), Ranong (1), Surat Thani (1) and Satun (1).
The North saw 5 new fatalities – in Nakhon Sawan (3), Tak (1) and Uttaradit (1).
The 11,754 new cases included 11,242 local infections and 11 imported cases. Of the local infections, 9,998 were confirmed at hospitals and 1,244 via mass testing.
Bangkok had 1,423 new cases (down from 1,630 the previous day), followed by 861 in Samut Prakan (up from 765), 820 in Chon Buri (up from 725), 545 in Yala (down from 561), 515 in Narathiwat (down from 617), 472 in Rayong (up from 380), 451 in Songkhla (down from 566), 406 in Pattani (up from 176), 378 in Nakhon Si Thammarat (down from 458) and 353 in Prachin Buri (up from 240).
Greater Bangkok reported 2,872 new cases (down from 3,133) and 54 new deaths (down from 56). Four southern border provinces had 1,917 new cases (down from 1,920) and 17 new fatalities (up from 3), while 67 other provinces recorded 6,453 new cases (down from 6,455) and 52 new deaths (up from 46).
“New cases in Bangkok and adjacent provinces are dropping… New cases in Bangkok alone declined significantly,” Dr Apisamai said.
“Meanwhile, infections rose in southern provinces. They used to form 15% of new cases nationwide but the percentage increased to 17%... New fatalities in the South were as high as 26… many southern provinces were among the top ten provinces with the most new cases,” she said.
Some people in the South complained that people did not wear face masks and some eateries violated the alcohol consumption ban and the closing hour at 10pm in some areas in many provinces in the region, Dr Apisamai said.
The 11 imported cases were from the United Arab Emirates (2), Nigeria (1), Bahrain (1), Cambodia 2), Malaysia (3) and Myanmar (2).
On Thursday 115,233 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals (down from 116,075 on the previous day), including 3,144 seriously ill patients (down from 3,175) and 709 dependent on ventilators (down from 717).
Global Covid-19 cases rose by 487,191 in 24 hours to 234.55 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 7,800 to 4.80 million. The United States had the most cases at 44.31 million, up 113,922, and the most deaths at 716,847, up 1,812.
