Local chief faces 50 years in jail for rape of minors

The Court of Appeal has sentenced the former chairman of Thung Maphrao tambon administrative organisation in Phangnga to 50 years in prison and ordered him to pay 2.5 million baht for the rape of two minors.

The head of Children, Youth and Family Foundation's legal department, Athiwat Niammeesri said on Monday that on Thursday, Suppasak Pokbut was sentenced to 50 years in prison for sexual assaults.

Mr Athiwat said a court of first instance in Phangnga had handed down the same sentence in December last year, for the abduction of minors from their parents, sexual assault and rape of the victims, who were 13 and 15 years old when the crimes took place.

According to the Phangnga court which first tried the case, the defendant committed 94 offences from the beginning of June 2016 and June 28, 2019 in Thai Muang district's tambon Thung Ma Prao and tambon Lam Kaen.

The court sentenced the defendant to 324 years and three months -- however, Thai law limits prison sentences to 50 years. The court also ordered the defendant to pay 2.5 million baht in total to the victims, with 7.5% interest counted from April 21 last year.

On Monday, the Court of Appeal dropped a charge of sexually attacking minors under 15. It also amended the interest rate from 7.5% to 5%, effective from April 11 this year.

Interest accrued from April 21 last year to April 10 this year remained at 7.5%.

Suppasak is still facing 50 years in jail in total.
