Man stabs his father to death

A 33-year-old man was arrested yesterday and charged with stabbing his father to death at the latter's home in Bangkok, police said.

Hatamet Thipha was detained at an apartment in Bung Kum district hours after police were alerted to the fatal attack at a house in Saphan Sung district on Sunday later afternoon.

Somboon Thipha, 66, was found dead near the front door with multiple knife wounds including two in the chest. The victim reportedly lived alone in the house after retiring.

According to police, a neighbour said he heard the victim call for help but found the man dead when he got to the house.

Another neighbour said he saw the man's son leave the house with bloodstains on his clothes while some witnesses said the man was carrying a knife, police said.

Police tracked Mr Hatamet down at his apartment in Bung Kum district and arrested him. Seized from his possession were a knife, the suspected weapon, and clothes and shoes he wore when the attack took place.

According to police, the suspect admitted to stabbing his father but claimed he did it in self-defence. He said he dropped by the house to get some stuff but was attacked by his father.

Mr Hatamet was charged with murdering his parent and carrying a knife in public.
