Park ranger mauled by bear

A park ranger was attacked and savaged by a bear while on patrol in Khao Yai National Park on Thursday.

According to the "Tee Nee Khao Yai" Facebook page, Udomsak Phokrathok, a park ranger, suffered broken arms and a broken leg when he was attacked by an Asian black bear in the park in Nakhon Ratchasima's Pak Chong district.

Mr Udomsak was rushed to Pak Chong Nana Hospital.

Asian black bears are declared a vulnerable species, mostly due to deforestation and active hunting for their body parts.

Two Karen men were arrested for poaching in Umphang wildlife sanctuary in Tak's Umphang district, while two others managed to flee, forestry officials said.

Authorities raided a hut near the wildlife reserve in tambon Mae Chan.

The men had killed wild animals, including bears, and kept the dismembered carcasses in the hut, according to officials.

The detainees were identified as Santi, 29, and Pong, 31.

Officials said they found 45kg of bear body parts and seized them as evidence.

Also confiscated from the hut were guns and ammunition, reports said.

The officials said they would ask the court to issue warrants for the arrest of  two others who fled.

Police in Umphang district were also alerted about the suspects.

The raid was ordered after photos from camera traps showed men with hunting gear and rifles, sources said.
