NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: Ten more communities in Muang district were put under lockdown on Tuesday to prevent the spread of Covid-19 while the number of infections at the Central Nakhon Si Thammarat prison jumped to 396.

The Nakhon Si Thammarat municipality put up notices closing off the 10 communities – Pa Long, Sai Charoen, Jampa Khom, Thung Cheen, Talad Hua-it (Soi Wassana), Don Fai (behind Wat Jaeng), Tha Chang (Soi Somboonsuk), Moom Pom, Na Phrathat and Pratu Khao.

The municipality earlier closed down 37 other communities to control the spread of Covid-19.

The Covid-19 infections in the Central Nakhon Si Thammarat prison remained high.

Pol Lt Col Vorachai Arakrat, commander of the prison, said the prison’s zone 6, the maximum security zone, had 396 infected inmates out of a total of 1,600. The trend continued to be high, he said.

To prevent the spread of the virus, prison authorities turned a training building in zone 6 into a quarantine and treatment facility for the infected inmates. Those in a high-risk group were separated from low-risk inmates. Mass testing was being conducted.

Prison officials and inmates in other zones were found not to be infected, said the prison chief.

The central prison has almost 7,000 inmates.
