Policemen wounded, pickup burned in daylight ambush

NARATHIWAT: Two policemen were wounded and their pickup set on fire in an ambush by armed men in Si Sakhon district on Tuesday, police reported.

Pol Capt Singha Wasanhirankit, 34, and Pol Sgt Assari Madlee, 30, were returning to Si Sakhon police station from Narathiwat Court court in a pickup when they were attacked.

Six gunmen in two groups of three opened fire on their vehicle about 1.40pm on a road near Tamung, Moo 2 village, in tambon Choeng Khiri.

The two officers fled from their vehicle. Pol Capt Singha was shot in a leg and Pol Sgt  Assari in an arm.

The ambushers then poured petrol on the police pickup and set it on fire, destroying it.

The wounded policemen made it to safety and were later admitted to Si Sakhon Hospital.

An investigation was underway into the attack.
