Man in custody over staged daughter 'murder' video

A man who posted a video of him trying to take his own daughter's life in a failed murder-suicide bid on his Facebook page has been arrested and charged with attempted murder, Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) said yesterday.

MPB chief, Pol Lt Gen Samran Nualma said Niran Sakulrak, 39, was arrested on Sunday in Buri Ram's Muang district after authorities tracked down the car he was travelling in, together with his daughter.

Mr Niran was taken to the MPB's headquarters in Bangkok for questioning, while his daughter was placed in the care of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Pol Lt Gen Samran said.

On Sunday, Mr Niran posted a video on Facebook which showed him wrapping a rope around his daughter's neck. In the video, the girl can be seen crying and saying she couldn't breathe, the MPB chief said.

Mr Niran can also be heard saying to his daughter, "Don't be afraid, Let's go together, just the two of us."

The shocking video grabbed the attention of the police, which sent investigators from MPB sub-division 8 to their house in Bangkok's Bang Mod area. While they didn't find anyone there, they found a rope similar to the one seen in the video.

Neighbours told police that Mr Niran was known to have done what he did several times to get back at his wife, who had left him. They said that after posting the video, Mr Niran left with his daughter to see relatives in Surin.

With support from highway and provincial police, Mr Niran was arrested in Buri Ram.

The suspect's estranged wife, Pakakaew, 29, was taken to Bang Mod police station for questioning.

She told police she left him two months ago, adding after she left, Mr Niran tried to hurt their daughter on three separate occasions to force her to return. Although having left him, she denied she has a new man in her life.

She also alleged Mr Niran had beaten her on several occasions.
