KANCHANABURI: A man has surrendered to police to face a charge of murdering a passenger in his mother's car, who was chased down by a motorcyclist and shot dead in Muang district on Monday morning.

Relatives accompanied Sitthichai Mankhong, 29, a local government employee, to surrender to Pol Lt Gen Thanayut Wutthicharasthamrong, commissioner of Provincial Police Region 7, around 4pm on Monday.

The victim, Ampol Bungthong, 27, native of Phetchabun province, was shot 10 times, in the head and body, with a 9mm pistol, police said.

Ampol was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by Rojana Cheewee, 50, of Kanchanaburi’s Muang district. A motoryclist confronted the pickup and driver when it stopped at an intersection about 8.20am.

Ampol fled from the pickup, chased by the man on the motorcycle, to the car park of an adjacent shopping mall. There, the motoryclist shot him dead, firing repeatedly at him.  A surveillance camera recorded the gunman shooting the victim.

Ms Rojana said she and the dead man were friends and they were on their way to get their second Covid-19 vaccine shot at Phahon Phonpayuhasena Hospital.

Five hours after the attack, police sought a court arrest warrant for Mr Sitthichai, who is Ms Rojana's son.

After his surrender, police took him to his house in tambon Tha Makam of Muang district. They seized as evidence a 9mm pistol believed used in the shooting, along with some ammunition, clothing and a motorcycle.

The suspect was due to be taken for a crime re-enactment on Tuesday. He faces a charge of murder.
