US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has cancelled his visit to Thailand planned for Thursday after a reporter travelling with his delegation contracted the coronavirus, the US embassy in Bangkok said on Wednesday.

"The secretary expressed his deep regret to the foreign minister that he would not be able to visit Bangkok this week," the embassy said.

Mr Blinken had informed Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai about the decision, it added.

The decision was made after a journalist travelling with Mr Blinken on his Southeast Asia tour  tested positive for the coronavirus.

Mr Blinken was scheduled to meet Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha at Government House on Thursday as part of his visit to Bangkok.

The Prime Minister's Office on Wednesday night confirmed the cancellation of the meeting.

The top US diplomat was returning to Washington to mitigate the risk of spreading Covid-19, the embassy said.
