Govt readies for child jab rollout

The government will be ready to roll out the Pfizer vaccine to children aged 5 to 11 next year, according to deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek.

Ms Rachada said the government has set a target to inoculate 5 million children and has prepared to procure 10 million doses of Pfizer vaccine for them.

Vaccinations will depend on the willingness of both children and parents, Ms Rachada said, adding that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha cares for the health and safety of both adults and children.

Education Minister Treenuch Thienthong has instructed the ministry's permanent secretary to gather information on all children aged 5-11 to prepare for the vaccination drive.

Permission must be granted by the parents first, Ms Treenuch said.

The move comes after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved on Monday lowering the vaccination age of children to 5 years old to receive Pfizer's Comirnaty vaccine. The dose will be reduced to 10 microgrammes.

The Comirnaty vaccine is the first Covid-19 vaccine approved by the administration for young children.

FDA deputy secretary-general Dr Surachoke Tangwiwat said on Saturday that the FDA has considered offering inactivated vaccines from China's Sinovac and Sinopharm to children.
