16,462 new Covid cases, most since August

The country registered 16,462 more Covid-19 cases - the most since August 2021 - and 27 new fatalities during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Wednesday morning.

This compared with the 27 coronavirus-related fatalities and 14,373 new cases reported on Tuesday morning.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said in the afternoon the 27 new fatalities were between the ages of 32 and 98, all Thai nationals.

Bangkok logged the most new deaths — eight — followed by two each in Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Chonburi. 

Mukdahan, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Pichit, Lampang, Uttaradit, Phuket, Surat Thani, Chachoengsao, Ratchaburi and Saraburi recorded one each.

Of the 16,462 new coronavirus cases announced on Wednesday, 16,326 cases were in the general population and 136 were new arrivals.

The CCSA said Bangkok had 2,891 new cases, followed by 994 in Samut Prakan, 805 in Chon Buri, 661 in Nonthaburi and 496 in Phuket.

On Tuesday, 10,868 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus, while 138,295 received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals, including 699 seriously ill patients and 155 dependent on ventilators

Since the pandemic started in early 2020, there have been 2,639,062 Covid-19 cases, including 415,627 cases this year, with 2,478,251 complete recoveries to date.

The accumulated death toll stood at 22,516 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The highest number of Covid-related fatalities in a 24-hour period was 312 recorded on Aug 13. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 18.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 1.9 million in 24 hours to almost 416 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 10,506 to 10 million. The United States had the most cases at almost 80 million, up 94,818, and the most deaths at 949,248, up 2,202.

Thailand ranked 31st with its accumulated 2.6 million cases.
