Prawit pushes satellite plan

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon aims to fast-track a proposal to set up a new satellite system to boost national development, national security and the environment, and present it to the cabinet for approval.

After presiding over the first meeting of the Committee of National Space Policy, which was held virtually, he said an agreement had been reached to appoint officials whose priority will be drafting the proposal for the cabinet.

It will cover, among other things, the direction of the project and the construction of the satellites.

Puchapong Nodtaisong, secretary-general of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, said the project encompasses five types of satellite intelligence, namely, communication satellites, earth observation satellites, satellite navigation (sat-nav), weather satellites and experimental satellites.

The data collected from each one will play a crucial role in national development, he said, adding it is time for the country to build and own its own satellites as part of a national system.
