Monk rescued after 50m fall in cave

KANCHANABURI: An injured monk was rescued from a mountain cave in Bo Phloy district after he fell about 50 metres to the floor when a rope ladder broke as he was entering it to meditate.

Phra Thada, 29, from a temple in Bangkok's Khlong San district, had travelled from a temple in Bangkok to meditate in the cave, on Khao Kluk Klee mountain in tambon Nong Ree.

About 4.20pm on Saturday, the Pithakkan Foundation was informed by people in Ban Nong Kae, the Moo 1 village of tambon Nong Ree, that the monk had suffered a fall and injured himself.

The monk was climbing down through an opening into the cave when the rope ladder broke. He fell nearly 50 metres to the cave floor.

Rescuers rushed to the mountain with lights and life-saving equipment to begin a rescue before night fell.

After 10 hours of gruellng work Phra Thada was brought back to the surface out of the cave about 3.30am on Sunday. He had serious injuries to his hips and both legs, 

Villagers said the cave, near their village, was a popular place for monks, novices and nuns wanting to meditate in this wilds of this western border province.
