An activist has filed proposals by women's rights groups urging Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to give as much priority to the solving of sex-related crimes as the government's crackdown on drugs and other felonies.
Rachada Dhnadirek, deputy government spokesperson, yesterday accepted eight proposals handed by Tanawadee Tajeen, coordinator of a trafficking prevention network, to mark International Women's Day today.
The proposals call for the government to refrain from legalising prostitution, casinos and electronic cigarettes for legal tax purposes because doing so would pose a risk to children, she said.
Women's rights groups are also calling on the Ministry of Labour to give eight days of fully paid maternity leave for women and reduce labour registration fees for Cambodian, Myanmar and Lao nationals, she said.
Moreover, the rights groups are asking the Interior Ministry to expedite the establishment of shelters for victims of domestic violence and sexual harassment, she said.
The proposals include one aiming for the revision of the Family Law that authorises the government to keep up with child support money from fathers for mothers who have custody over children, she said.
