The Transport Ministry will waive toll fees on several motorways during the week-long Songkran holiday next month.

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob on Wednesday said affiliated agencies have been instructed to waive tolls during the period as many motorists will be travelling in and out of the capital.

Mr Saksayam said toll charges will be waived on the Burapha Withi (Bang Na-Chon Buri) and Kanchanaphisek (Bang Phli-Suksawat) expressways from April 12 to 18.

The waving of toll fees for seven days also applies to two motorways: Highway 7 (Bangkok-Pattaya); and Highway 9 on the Bang Pa In-Bang Phli, Phra Pradaeng-Bang Khae and Phra Pradaeng-Bang Khunthian sections.

On three other expressways - Si Rat, Udonratthaya and Chalermmahanakorn - access will be available for free from April 13 to 15.

On Motorway 6, sections from Pak Chong, Sikhiu to Kham Thale So districts in Nakhon Ratchasima will waive toll fees during the period April 11 to 15 on outbound routes and from April 15 to 18 for motorists travelling inbound.

In addition, Suvarnabhumi airport will allow passengers to park for free over the holiday at its long-term car park in Zone C from April 11 to 17, Mr Saksayam said.

For the sake of easing traffic bottlenecks, the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and planning (OTP) suggests motorists who plan to travel within 300 kilometres from the capital start their journey from April 14 and return to Bangkok by April 16, while long-distance travellers should begin travelling from April 12 to 13 and return during the weekend of April 16 and 17.

Road checkpoints will also be increased to ensure safety in line with preventive measures against Covid-19, he added.
