A male tiger called Thanakorn that ranked as one of the social media stars of Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary in Uthai Thani has died at the age of 10.

The Tiger Project of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation announced on its Facebook page that the tiger passed away in the sanctuary on Tuesday.

He died from injuries sustained while fighting another tiger.

Researchers from a company monitoring Thanakorn with an electronic collar reported they could no longer detect a pulse, prompting them to search the area on foot to confirm their suspicions.

On March 10 the tiger left the sanctuary to forage for food near a fire control station in Lan Sak district. He reportedly ate a dog that was a pet of a station officer. Officers searched for Thanakorn and caught him two days later with a slight wound to one of his legs.

Researchers first met Thanakorn, named in honour of Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osottanakorn, six years ago but it took them over two years to approach the animal and attach the collar due to its stubborn character.
