Probe into 'molester' doc claims

Ten patients raise complaints

The Medical Council of Thailand (MCT) will investigate claims of molestation by a woman patient against a doctor whom she claimed rubbed his genitals against her behind during treatment at a local clinic.

Details were posted on the Facebook account, Omber OmOm, by the alleged victim.

A popular Facebook page, Mor Lab Panda (Lab Doctor Panda), referred to the post. The woman's post described how she went to see her regular doctor at a hospital for treatment of tonsillitis which had worsened on May 3.

However, the doctor was away, so she decided to seek treatment from another doctor at a clinic near her house. She did not give its location.

At the clinic, the woman said she met a receptionist who ushered her into a room where the doctor who examined her suggested she pull down her pants so he could administer a treatment shot to her backside.

The woman said she was alone with the doctor and was caught unawares by the suggested backside injection as she usually gets shots in the arm.

The doctor also asked her to lie on her side facing the wall with her buttocks facing him. While he was injecting her, the doctor moved towards her backside and squeezed her waist, which she thought was part of the treatment procedure.

The doctor then leaned over and she could feel his genitals rubbing against her behind.

Another woman said she went through a similar ordeal with the doctor. However, she said she had no evidence except a short video clip captured of the doctor standing too close to her, according to Mor Lab Panda.

The woman was unsure if the clip was enough evidence against the doctor. She decided to tell her story on social media. After that, another eight women stepped forward to say they had been similarly harassed by the doctor.

MCT secretary-general Dr Itthaporn Kanacharoen said the council will investigate after victims file a formal complaint.

He said the council cannot act on unsubstantiated accounts shared in social media, so more details would be needed.

He said the council was not authorised to mount a criminal investigation, which is the police's job. It can order an ethical probe against doctors who, if found guilty, stand to lose his or her medical licence.

The victims could file a complaint either with the police or the council or with both. Complainants would be treated with fairness and their information will be kept in strictest confidence.
