Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has thanked the US for its assistance in securing the return of an antique gold crown which forms part of a 500-year-old Buddha statue from the Lanna era, said deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek on Saturday.

Helping to secure the return of the crown -- made of 95% gold and weighing about 42 grammes -- was the US Department of Homeland Security.

It is not clear from where in the US the crown was retrieved, but it is now being kept at the National Museum in Thailand for study and exhibition.

The spokeswoman said progress was being made in bringing back a number of bronze sculptures believed to have originated from the Prakon Chai archaeological site in Buri Ram. They are among exhibits at the Denver Art Museum.

In May last year, two ancient lintels, which authorities believed were stolen from archaeological sites at Prasat Khao Lon historical sanctuary in Sa Kaeo and Prasat Nong Hong in Buri Ram in the early 1960s, were returned to the kingdom.

The lintels, which had been displayed at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, were exhibited at the Bangkok National Museum near the Grand Palace for three months.
