Student run over by Hat Yai fire truck

SONGKHLA: A local university student was killed when the motorcycle she was riding was hit by a fire engine at an intersection in Hat Yai city on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred about 9am at an intersection near the Public Relations Office Region 6 on Nipat Songkroh road, Pol Lt Col Somkiat Kamsuwan, a Hat Yai police officer, said.

Police and rescuers from the Mitrapap Samakkhi Foundation were rushed to the scene.

They found Cholthicha Singprom, 21, a second-year student at a university in Muang district, lying dead  on the road near her damaged motorcycle. She had been run over and her head crushed by a Hat Yai Municipality fire truck.

Supachai Srikhlam, 44, the fire truck driver, had waited for police to arrive.

He said he was on the way to Jiranakhon Sport Stadium for a fire drill. He planned to turn left at the intersection. He saw in his side mirror that a motorcycle was on his left side. As he turned, the two vehicles collided. The motorcycle crashed to the ground and the girl was run over. 

Police said the driver would be charged.
