Iconic skywalk planned for Phuket

The Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO) plans to invest 250 million baht to build a skywalk as a tourist landmark.

The Phuket PAO and Rawai municipality held a public hearing on Tuesday to promote the project among residents.

PAO president Rawat Areerob said two locations are being scouted. One is on a hilltop in Khao Daeng in Rawai, on the southern tip of the island. The other is near Surin beach in Thalang, on the west coast.

The PAO hired Core Technology Consultants to design the skywalk. It will seek permission to use the land from Phuket's governor and the Royal Forest Department next month, said Mr Rawat.

''We expect to spend 250 million baht on the project. The skywalk will attract more tourists to our resort island,'' he said.

Nutthachat Huengwattanakul, the project manager at Core Technology Consultants, said the company will offer three designs.

The first will be based on Sino-Portuguese architecture, the second will show Phuket as a "pearl of the Andaman", and the last will focus on presenting the island as a "gateway" to the Andaman.

Mr Nutthachat said he preferred the last concept, adding the design would also include the wings of an eagle in flight as it heads out to sea.

He said a glass walkway would protrude about 10 metres from the edge of the hilltop, making people feel like they are walking on air. It will be able to support up to 50 visitors at a time.

The skywalk building will also have meeting facilities, a plaza and other multi-purpose zones to serve various business purposes, he said, adding the design will be completed in November.
