Chaiwat denies ties to activist's death

Chaiwat Limlikit-aksorn, the former chief of Kaeng Krachan National Park accused of being involved in the disappearance and murder of a Karen rights activist, yesterday maintained his innocence and said he was ready to fight the charges in court.

Mr Chaiwat was reacting to media reports that the Office of the Attorney-General had decided to indict him and three others over the disappearance and death of Porlajee "Billy" Rakchongcharoen in 2014.

He said he had evidence to prove his innocence in court. However, Mr Chaiwat claimed the case against him had something to do with his campaign against forest encroachment and human trafficking.

He also questioned the timing of the criminal lawsuit which he said came shortly after his request to be reinstated as a civil servant was granted by Phetchaburi's Administrative Court.
