Pheu Thai to win poll, ex-PM says

The opposition Pheu Thai Party is likely to return to power in the coming general election, says former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Delivering a speech yesterday at the Bangkok Post Forum 2022, "Thailand Ready: Moving onto the Next Chapter", Mr Abhisit said the Thai political landscape was designed by those who wanted to see a coalition government with many parties, allowing the so-called "3 Ps" to hold power.

The 3 Ps is a nickname given to the three generals, PM Prayut Chan-o-cha, Deputy PM Prawit "Pom" Wongsuwon and Interior Minister Anupong "Pok" Paojinda.

"They intended to achieve stability and security for the political landscape but this has come with a price, which is increased frustration and disappointment, particularly among the young generation," Mr Abhisit said.

"They have felt the continuity that comes with conservatism doesn't answer the challenges in the future. The party that they have thrown their support behind was disbanded in a controversial decision.

"They put a high priority on rights, liberty and democracy. Their disappointment has been building up for over three years."

He added the coalition government is not in a good condition. Recent by-election results and the outcome of the Bangkok election reveal negative sentiment towards the government, he said.

A recent change to the electoral system will also benefit the Pheu Thai Party, he added.

"There is an appetite for change. It is likely the current opposition parties will win the majority vote in the Lower House," he said.

"It is also likely that Thaksin's daughter will be the party's candidate for prime minister," Mr Abhisit said.

"If the party could learn about the past, I think the country can move on but if not, there is still considerable risk in terms of abuse of power and corruption.

"Significantly, if it can't detach itself from one person or family's benefits, we will be back to pre-coup 2014."

Mr Abhisit said the country's next chapter should be written under the principles of accountability and responsibility, as well as the strengthening of checks and balances.
