Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon has given his personal assurance there will be no recurrence of the disastrous 2011 floods this year.

The interim prime minister made his bold forecast during a trip to Chachoengsao province on Thursday.

Gen Prawit said  people were concerned about the heavy rains of late, and feared another deluge from the North, like occurred 11 years ago.

"I guarantee that this year will not be a repeat of 2011. Definitely there will not be flooding such as happened in 2011," he said.

Agencies including the Royal Irrigation Department and the Office of National Water Resources were collaboratively distributing water surging downstream from the North to ensure there was no uncontrolled  flooding.

"We have committees overseeing 22 river basins. There are provincial water committees to monitor local water supplies. They have worked for three years, and during that time there has been no drought," Gen Prawit said.

He said the government would allocate about 100 million baht next week to study the construction of sluicegates to protect Prachin Buri province from seawater.
