Sarus crane hatched at zoo

A sarus crane chick has been recently hatched at a zoo in Pathum Thani's Thanyaburi district, according to a Zoological Park Organisation (ZPO) director.

Attaporn Srihayrun said it came from a pair of cranes transferred from Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo.

Mr Attaporn said sarus cranes living at the newly built zoo mate and build nests on their own. The zoo has an artificial pond where they can lay their eggs.

Initially, the female laid two eggs but both failed to hatch, he said.

She chose a more favourable spot for incubation on her third attempt.

Mr Attaporn said it took about 30 days for the egg to hatch and was the first saurus crane chick to be hatched at the zoo.

"The birth of this baby bird proves the zoo is very capable in conservation work, especially since the Thai crane was declared [almost] extinct," he said.

The ZPO says it can return 10–12 cranes to their natural habitat annually with the help of the Wildlife Conservation Centre at Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo and the conservation park for wildlife rehabilitation at Huai Chorake Mak Reservoir in Buriram.
