PATTAYA: Runoff into the sea from the downpour and strong wind that pounded Pattaya City for over an hour on Sunday night has eroded the city's recently rebuilt beach.

Many roads in Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri, were left flooded and impassable to traffic after the rain.

When the rain stopped and the floodwater receded, Pattaya's new beach, which had been built up with sand from an outlying island, was found to have been heavily eroded. Sand was swept into the sea, leaving many long, deep scours and the sandbags underneath clearly visible.

Garbage was also left strewn along nearly all the city roads. Many residents were seen cleaning up outside their homes on Monday morning.

Residents said beach erosion and garbage in the streets have become a common sight every time it floods during heavy rain.
