SONGKHLA: A fishing boat up for sale was gutted by fire and a nearby boat slightly damaged by the flames at a pier in Muang district shortly before dawn on Monday.

The fire started about 5.30am aboard a fishing boat at Saksitpitak jetty on Nakhon Nok road in Songkla Municipality, police said.

Municipal firefighters brought the flames under control after about two hours, but continued to douse both boats with water to ensure the fire did not flare up again.

The fishing boat, the Hong Yok 6, was burned out, but was still floating. It was on sale and had been moored at the jetty for viewing by prospective buyers. It was not in use and no fishing gear was on board. It was not immediately known who owned it. Nobody was aboard when the fire started.

The other boat, the Korn Kanok 2, is a tug boat and was moored nearby. It was slightly damaged by flames that spread from the Hong Yok 6.

Police were investigating the cause of the fire.
