CHIANG MAI: New cracks were found in a school building and at a temple after a 4.1-magnitude earthquake shook Doi Saket district early on Thursday morning.

The epicentre of the earthquake, felt in about 15 districts of Chiang Mai and nearby provinces, was beneath tambon Mae Khue of Doi Saket district.

A team led by Chiang Mai governor Nirat Pongsitthithaworn surveyed tambon Mae Khue for damage later on Thursday.

Residents there said it was the most powerful quake in years, and they felt lucky there was no serious damage.

However, new cracks were seen at Mae Khue Wittaya School and Wat Nong Bua Phra Chao Luang in tambon Mae Khue. The cracks were in pillar bases, ceilings and walls.

The governor ordered the chiefs of all 25 districts in the province to look for any other damage and local irrigation offices to examine Mae Kuang Udom Thara dam in Doi Saket, Mae Ngat Somboon Chon dam in Mae Taeng district and other reservoirs for damage.

Local administrative officials were instructed to survey buildings, including high-rise buildings, and old houses for possible damage, and cultural and Buddhism officials to check all temples and ancient sites, to ensure they were safe to enter.

The moment an earthquake hits Chiang Mai province on Thursday is caught on CCTV cameras. (Video: Chiang Mai News)
