Asean backs Timor Leste's bid to join bloc

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is ready to provide support to Timor Leste's bid for full Asean membership, deputy secretary-general to the prime minister and acting government spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri said.

Mr Anucha yesterday disclosed the decision of Asean leaders to agree in principle to the admission of Timor-Leste as the 11th member of Asean for its accession under observer status where it would be allowed to participate in all Asean meetings including the summit plenaries.

Mr Anucha said an objective criteria-based roadmap for Timor-Leste's full membership will be formalised, while all Asean member states and external partners will fully support the nation's efforts with the provision of capacity building assistance and any other necessary or relevant support.

The Asean summit concluded in Phnom Penh on Sunday.
