13 warrants issued over 'macau888'

The Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants against 13 suspects, including alleged owner Chaiwat "Benz Demon" Kajornboonthavorn, relating to the macau888 gambling network.

The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) sought the warrants on charges including persuading others to gamble, adverting the illegal activity and money laundering, after one of its members was arrested last Friday.

Mr Chaiwat is the oldest of the so-called "four brothers", all with the initial "Bor" who have been accused by a TV actress of operating the site.

The crackdown on the website came following a string of allegations made in a Facebook post by TV actress Arisara "Due" Thongborisut on Jan 15. Police have thanked her for coming forward.

Deputy national police chief Pol Gen Torsak Sukwimol led a police cyber taskforce and police commandos to launch a crackdown in 30 spots across the country at 1am yesterday.

So far, eight members of the network have been arrested in the operation, Pol Gen Torsak said.

One raid took place at a luxury condominium in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok's Watthana district belonging to one of the four brothers, although the premises proved to be empty.

CCTV footage suggested the Mr Chaiwat had left the room on Thursday night, Pol Gen Torsak said.

A source said an entertainment venue in Bangkok's Royal City Avenue (RCA) was raided early yesterday on suspicion of helping launder profits made by the site.

After a bag of ketamine was found on the floor, the Metropolitan Police Bureau closed the popular venue for a month.

An investigation is also underway to uncover any financial links with macau888, said the source.
