The Minister of Digital Economy and Society (DES), Chaiwut Thanakhamanusorn, has proposed the setup of an Asean committee focused on fraud prevention from call centre gangs.

Mr Chaiwut made the proposal on Thursday at the Asean Digital Ministers’ Meeting at Boracay, a resort island in the Philippines.

He said that with cybercrime being an urgent problem among Asean members, regional cooperation is needed.

The meeting agreed with the Thai representatives' proposal.

Representatives of the Asean Secretariat, representatives of 10 Asean member states, dialogue partner states, and the International Telecommunication Union attended the third Asean Digital Ministers’ Meeting from Monday through Wednesday.

The meeting focused on the digital cooperation, including Asean-European Union cooperation on international information sharing and the region’s artificial intelligence geography.

The meeting also discussed projects in 2023 that support the Asean Digital Masterplan 2025, according to Mr Chaiwut.
