Passing of the late king to be marked

The government is planning activities to mark the seventh anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great's passing on Friday.

Teerapong Wongsiwawilas, permanent secretary of the Prime Minister's Office, said the government had been granted permission by His Majesty the King to organise the activities.

In Bangkok, Buddhist chanting ceremonies will be held, and alms will be given to 189 monks at Sanam Luang at 7.30am on Friday. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, cabinet ministers, government officials, their spouses and members of the public will take part.

In the provinces, similar ceremonies will also take place at provincial halls or other suitable locations, while Thai embassies and consulates overseas can also hold theirs.

State agencies, private companies and members of the public are also invited to hold ceremonies as they see fit, Mr Teerapong said.

State agencies, private companies, and members of the public are also encouraged to set up altars along with a portrait of the late king for people to pay their respects to until the end of this month.

The National Identity Board under the PM's Office has also been instructed to produce a television documentary to be released on the memorial day for the late king, Mr Teerapong said.

Last month, the government approved the official name for the memorial day for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great on Oct 13 as "Navamindra Maharaj Day". The words "Navamindra Maharaj" mean the ninth greatest king as HM the late king was the ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty.

King Rama IX passed away on Oct 13, 2016, at Siriraj Hospital at age 88.
