Duen, the one-month-old elephant calf which strayed from its herd in Nakhon Ratchasima last month, has died, authorities said on Wednesday.

The death was announced on Facebook by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation and Kanchana Silpa-archa, an adviser for the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment.

Duen was found wandering around a cassava farm in tambon Jorakeh Hin on Nov 8. Wildlife rangers built a shelter to keep it safe from the elements, but its mother never returned for the calf.

The elephant calf began losing weight as it stopped eating, prompting veterinarians to put it under 24-hour observation and administer intravenous nutrition.

However, Duen's condition continued to deteriorate, and it died around 4am on Wednesday, according to the Save Khon, Save Chang ("Save People, Save Elephants") wildlife conservation group.
