11 'illegals' held after police chase

SA KAEO: Eleven Bangladeshis were arrested in Khlong Hat district on Saturday on suspicion that they were undocumented, local police said yesterday.

The suspects, aged 22–47 years old, were held after their pickup overshot a curve while speeding away from the authorities and overturned along the road in tambon Benchakhon, police said.

All of the passengers, including a Thai driver, were rescued, they said.

All 11 Bangladesh nationals were sent to the Khlong Hat Police Station, while the Thai driver escaped following the rescue, they said.

Investigators from the Sa Kaeo Immigration Police checkpoint at 10am yesterday conducted an operation to arrest suspected illegal migrants after Pol Col Naphatphong Suphapron, Immigration Office Superintendent, received a report about a group of suspects, police said.

A chase for the suspects started along the Khlong Hat-Watthana Nakhon Road, heading towards Watthana Nakhon district, police said.

According to the police investigation, all 11 Bangladeshi nationals illegally entered Thailand with the help of a Cambodian recruiter, police said. Each suspect was required to pay 5,000 baht for the service, police said.

Police said the suspects entered the country through the Cambodian border and were heading to Malaysia for work. The suspects were expected to stop in Bangkok before going to Malaysia through the Thai border, according to the investigation.
