Bangkok's PM2.5 to reach orange level in 17 districts

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has warned of a spike in fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) that will push at least 17 Bangkok districts into the "orange zone" today.

The Pollution Control Department (PCD) said it expects the high dust levels to linger until Tuesday.

The BMA's Facebook page yesterday posted a warning that PM2.5 would reach the orange, higher-than-moderate levels which are unhealthy for individuals with precarious health conditions in 17 districts. The districts are Laksi, Chatuchak, Klong Toey, Phra Khanong, Bang Na, Phaya Thai, Din Daeng, Huai Khwang, Klong Sam Wa, Min Buri, Saphan Sung, Taling Chan, Bangkok Noi, Thawi Watthana, Bang Khae, Bang Bon and Nong Khaem.

Meanwhile, the PCD warned of 133 PM2.5 "hot spots" throughout Thailand and 2,447 hot spots in neighbouring Cambodia, as reported by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

The agency has expressed concerns the dust pollution situation in the neighbouring country could have a knock-on effect in Thailand and Bangkok, possibly resulting in higher PM2.5 in the area as the capital is set to experience less wind needed for easing the haze levels tomorrow and Tuesday.

The PCD and the BMA are asking residents in the inner areas of Bangkok in particular to opt for public transport instead of driving. They are also urged to avoid burning activities.
