The National Office of Buddhism (NOB) will work with the Social Development and Human Security Ministry to check if the unorthodox Buddhist preaching practiced by an eight-year-old boy called "Nong Nice" whose parents claim he is the son of the Lord Buddha in a previous life, is a scam.

The NOB was ordered to look into the matter by the Prime Minister's Office minister Puangpet Chunlaiad.

Ms Puangpet said NOB director Intaporn Chaniam and ministry officials will investigate the Nong Nice case, in which the boy purportedly possesses telepathic powers to communicate with followers.

The team will be established to see if the claims were orchestrated to deceive people, he said.

Nong Nice reportedly runs courses and forums to communicate with devotees via meditation. The eight-year-old recently told his followers that he had communicated telepathically with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Administrative fees are said to be charged, although the boy does not collect any payments from followers.

Ms Puangpet said the boy's parents must also be interviewed to determine whether they have been giving false information about their son.

Minister Varawut Silpa-archa said the authorities are collecting information, including video clips posted online about the boy and his activities, before sending them to psychologists at Surat Thani Hospital and the Rajanagarindra Institute of Child and Adolescent Mental Health for assessment.

Meanwhile, Niramit Theva Chuti, a Facebook page that disseminates Nong Nice's teachings, released a statement warning that it is considering suing media outlets which report "false stories" about Nong Nice and his family.

The page's operator will also submit a complaint to the prime minister to request his assistance in ensuring justice for Nong Nice.

The operator added that the authorities should step in and adopt measures to control media reporting that hurts the reputation of Nong Nice.
